Prayer for the Beginning of the School Year

Lord Jesus,
We ask for Your strength and guidance as we begin this new school year. Allow us to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before us.
Open our eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings. Open our heart and mind to new friendships, new staff and new students.  Give us a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with our endeavours and courage to accept challenges.
Help us to be attentive to one another and let us experience Your presence in our new friends. Jesus, inspire us to ‘Be More’ and do our best this year!

Amen

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome back for the start of the 2026 school year! After much anticipation, it was a delight to see our students and families return, refreshed and eager after the holidays. This year we welcome 52 new families to the Liwara community from Pre Kindy to Year 6. It was heartening to see the way that new students and families are welcomed and made feel comfortable by our existing students and families and the way that all go out of their way to say hello and take the time to help others. This was noticeable in the grounds, and the classrooms; a true lived example of the meaning of the school’s name Liwara which means ‘Building Community’. Congratulations to all, existing and new members of the community.

Catholic Identity

Staff Mass

Last Thursday the Leadership Team and staff new to the Archdiocese of Perth attended the Commissioning Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth. At this special Mass, our new staff were commissioned to serve in their role at Liwara Catholic Primary School. On Friday, the staff attended morning Mass as a group.

Whole School Mass

This morning, we came together as a Catholic community to celebrate the opening Mass for Term One. Thank-you to Father Elver for leading the Mass, Angela Leddin and Stefanie Neri for preparing the Mass and the musicians, choir, altar servers and all who participated by attending the Mass.

Education Pillar

As we begin the year, there are two ways to ensure that our children have the greatest opportunity of experiencing success.  One of these is a strong partnership between home and school.  If each child understands and witnesses that the home and school are on the same team and are committed to their growth and development, they will be more positive about their learning and more likely to succeed.  Secondly, if we each have high expectations of our children, they are more accountable to their families and school and they raise their standards to meet what is being asked of them. This applies to attention to learning tasks, homework, uniform and presentation, respect towards others and the way they represent themselves, their families and their school.

Community Pillar

Crest and Motto

During the Professional Development sessions last week, the staff focused on the meaning of the Liwara crest and motto and how this symbolism can drive our work as a team.

Our Crest -

  • The outer circle symbolises the cosmos - the unity of all creation, always moving.
  • Rising from the outside circle we have another circle symbolising the growing and forming of the people of Liwara.
  • The circle then moves into the outside circle showing that we are always a part of the wider community - district, our state, our country and our world.
  • The figure in a stance of hope and joy - represents all of us as people growing in our faith, becoming and forming the Liwara community.
  • Penetrating all the elements of the crest is the Christ symbol - this represents the centering of our whole life in Jesus. This centering of our life in Jesus gives the significance to our Catholic school.

Our Motto – “Strength in Community”

  • How can we live our motto in daily school life?
  • How do we work together to encourage our students to live the motto.

Stewardship Pillar

 Staffing News

Congratulations to Lucy Heke on her new role as Finance Officer at St Patrick's Catholic Primary School. Lucy has capably served Liwara for over 2 years. I want to take this opportunity to thank Lucy for her professionalism and proficiency and wish her all the best for her role. She will be greatly missed.

Holiday Projects

During the holiday break, thanks to the hard work of our finance officer, administration officer and grounds staff, various capital and maintenance projects took place including the installation of new Early Learning Centre playground fencing and other maintenance projects including painting, electrical work and holiday cleaning.

CYBER SAFETY

New Social Media Age Rules for Under‑16s

From 10 December 2025, new Australian laws require major social media platforms—such as Facebook, Instagram, Kick, Reddit, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, Twitch, X and YouTube—to take steps to prevent children under 16 from having accounts. Find the updated list here: Which social media platforms are age-restricted? | eSafety Commissioner

The aim is to protect young people from harmful or addictive online content and reduce screen time by delaying access to social media until age 16. Social media features like constant notifications, disappearing stories and recommended content are designed to keep you online longer. These can affect wellbeing by causing stress, reducing sleep, making it harder to focus, encouraging unhealthy comparisons, and exposing you to negative or upsetting content.

The new social media restrictions aim to protect under‑16s from these impacts and give young people more time to develop emotional, social and digital skills so they can better recognise and manage harmful online experiences.

Families are encouraged to talk with their children about the changes and find healthy, screen‑free ways to stay connected and engaged.

SCHOOL VALUES - RESPECT

In Term One we are focusing on our school value of Respect.  We display respect by taking care of resources and our belongings, following directions and rules and working co-operatively.

CANTEEN NEWS

We hope that all families had a wonderful break and everyone is happy to be starting the new school year.

For our new families ordering their lunches for the first time, you can find our menu and on-line ordering at www. Quickcliqs.com.au.   It is an easy process to create an account and set up your children ready to order a healthy and nutritious lunch.  For returning families you will be prompted to update your new class details before ordering.  We have not made any changes with the menu at this stage, as we feel our menu covers a large range of great options.  We have, however, had a price increase across all the items including recess and after lunch icy cubes.  Recess is still available over the counter for selected items; please bring small change or notes if possible. Thank you.

Cut off is at 9am for ordering that day, however, you can order up to two weeks in advance if you wish.  Just a reminder that we cannot change any ingredients in our sushi or focaccia orders, as they are pre-made for us/collected on the day.   We hope that you love the fresh meals that we make and provide, without all the additives that are usually included in store bought items.

If you receive an IOU note sent home, sometimes for a forgotten online order or lunch at home, a misplaced lunch box and even a sneaky crow or two enjoying the spoils they find, these can be paid at the Canteen with cash, at the office or via Quickcliqs on-line order for the next day.   If you choose this last option, please mark this order with “This is paying for an IOU, please do not provide”, in the comments section of your order. Thank you.

On Tuesday, 17 February, we will be selling pikelets for pancake day.  We will have apple & cinnamon, blueberry, plain and GF for $1.00 each.  Maximum of two per student will be sold. Delicious!

Have a great year and thank you for supporting the Liwara Canteen in 2026.

Check out the menu at https://www.liwara.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/Canteen-Menu-Updated-12-December-2025.pdf - there is something for everyone to enjoy!!
