Dear Parents and Caregivers 

I hope you had a nice change of pace, over the term break, if it was possible with your work commitments.  Thank-you for maintaining high standards for your children for the beginning of Term Three. Small daily actions, such as wearing the school uniform neatly and being prepared with the necessary equipment for learning, help students develop pride in themselves and their school. These habits build self-confidence and support a positive mindset for learning and achievement. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Catholic Performing Arts Opening Mass 

Yesterday, two of our Year 6 music students, Erin and Scarlett, accompanied our Music Teacher Miss Mandry and Miss Leddin to the opening Mass for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival at St Mary’s Cathedral. The Mass was lovely, enhanced by excellent liturgical music. The Catholic Catholic Performing Arts Festival commences next week. We wish our ensembles, choirs and individual entrants all the very best.   

Opening Term Mass 

Today, we celebrated the Beginning-of-Term Mass at our parish. Father Elver is away. Thank-you to Father Ziggy for leading the Mass, and all the school staff and students who assisted in preparing the Mass and participating in the music and other ministries during Mass.  

2026 Census

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will be conducting the five-yearly national Census of Population and Housing on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. One key question that is optional asks Australians to identify their religion. For Catholics, this question is crucial to helping Catholic parishes, schools, dioceses, and organisations understand their communities. NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week was officially celebrated in the holidays. Since 1975, NAIDOC Week has been held every year to celebrate and elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, culture and resilience. This year marks 50 years of celebrating the people who built NAIDOC Week, the stories that have been shared, the culture that has been celebrated, and the leadership that has inspired.   

Classes have been involved in creating a collaborative artwork, a colouring competition and cooking, among other hands-on activities to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Themed literacy activities have been shared and next week we have an incursion booked with the Yirra Yaakin Theatre Group coming to perform and hold a Q and A session. Thank-you to the staff in the Gecko’s Culture Team for coordinating these learning experiences.

Liwara Digital Museum 

The launch of the Liwara Digital Museum is a wonderful celebration of our school's rich history and the dedication of staff who have worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. What began as Andrea Millar's dream to create a place where "the beautiful school has its history out there for all to read about" has become a reality through the combined efforts of Andrea Millar, Gaye Margetic and Amanda McCabe. Andrea's commitment to "leave a legacy" for future generations inspired the project, while Gaye laid important foundations through earlier website development work. Amanda's expertise and creativity helped transform the vision into the engaging digital experience we can now share with our community. Their collaboration, perseverance and belief in preserving Liwara's story have created a lasting resource that honours our past, celebrates our present and inspires future generations. We thank them for their outstanding contribution to our school community. Holiday Maintenance and Minor Works 

We are excited to share that the upper basketball court renovation is almost complete. The resurfacing occurred over the holidays, and the line marking is the final stage that is currently underway. Several other maintenance, safety, gardening, cleaning and improvement projects were completed over the holidays. Many thanks to our grounds staff, Chris and Ken, and Kirsten Staples and Stef Neri for coordinating the external contractors.  

Flu Vaccinations 

The Department of Health continues to encourage annual flu vaccination as an important way to protect individuals, families and the wider community from influenza.​ ​There have been some recent changes to make flu vaccinations more accessible for school-aged children: 

• FluMist®, the needle-free nasal spray flu vaccine, is now available for children and adolescents aged 2–17 years, including students attending Catholic Education primary and secondary schools. 

• Free influenza vaccinations are available for all Western Australians aged six months and older until 31 July 2026, providing an excellent opportunity for families who have not yet received their flu vaccination this year.​ ​ 

We encourage all families to take advantage of these options to help keep our school community healthy and well during the winter season. 

WA Student Assistant Payment 

The WA Student Assistance Payment helps parents and carers with the cost-of-living pressures associated with sending their children to school. Families can claim $150.00 per student from Kindy to Year 6.​ ​ Eligible families can now access information on how to make a claim submission through the ServiceWA app - click on this link to access the app:   ServiceWA app: WA Student Assistance Payment 2026 

​All Western Australian school students in Kindergarten to Year 12, with a valid WA student number (WASN), are eligible for this cost-of-living payment.​ ​ Families of students who have not received a previous Semester Report (students in Kindergarten, and those new to the Liwara since this year) will have received a letter with their child's WASN this week. All other families from Pre Primary to Year 6 can access their WASN via SEQTA ENGAGE: https://liwara.engage.cewa.edu.au/ 

All claims must be received by Friday 25 September 2026.
