FAITH TRUST RESPECT MERCY
Our Leadership Team
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and Students,
What an eventful couple of weeks it has been at Liwara, where children experienced many opportunities to showcase their talents and join in with the fun at recent events: Science Water Corporation Incursion; Australian Earth Science Education Incursion, Footsteps Dance lessons; Confirmation Celebrations; Learning Journey; Interschool Dance Competition at Mandurah Catholic College and to finish up the week, our Liwara Athletics Carnival. Many thanks to all staff involved in coordinating these events which continue to highlight our school’s wonderful community spirit.
Next week is our final week of Term 3 and we will gather together to celebrate Mass, on Friday 24, at 11.15am, capably led by our delightful Year 4 students. This is another opportunity for us to be thankful for the many blessings we have shared throughout the term and call to mind the many things we are grateful for in our lives. All members of our community are welcome to join us. The presentation of our Mercy Value certificates and medals will be awarded to the students after Mass. We look forward to our community supporting the Special Events Ministry cupcake fundraiser for the Starlight Foundation on Wednesday 22 September. On Thursday 23 our Early Childhood students will have lots of fun at their mini carnival and we will experience the amazing Footsteps Dance Showcase on Thursday afternoon. After Mass on Friday we will celebrate Mercy Day, on our last day of the term.
Congratulations to our Year Six students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation last weekend. All the students executed their roles in the Mass beautifully, displayed reverence and represented their families and school with such grace and prayerfulness. Thank you, Year Sixes!
It was heart-warming walking around the classrooms last Tuesday evening listening to the delightful conversations and stories that our students were sharing with their families at our Learning Journey. The students were proud to showcase their classrooms as well as the work they have done in our specialist area classes. It was inspiring talking to a few of our Year 6 parents who have been a part of our Liwara community for up to twenty two years and how humble they were with gratitude for everything the school has done for their children over the years. They were understandably saddened to be saying farewell to Liwara at the end of 2021.
On Tuesday 14 September I was delighted to accompany a group of 24 Year 6 students and Mrs Huntington to the 2021 Inter-School Primary Dance Challenge at Mandurah Catholic College. For the first time, the College was pleased to welcome three local and one visiting school, Liwara CPS, to compete in the Dancezone WA annual competition that has been running for 17 years and is proudly supported by The Dance Connect. Students selected by the dance teachers from Assumption CPS, Tranby College, North Dandalup Primary & Liwara joined Mandurah Catholic College’s Year 4 to 6 students performing the following dance styles: Square Rumba; Cha Cha; Jive and the Samba. Our students proudly showed off their ‘moves’ and had enormous fun competing and jubilantly bringing home some team trophies.
As I write this on the eve of our Liwara Athletics Carnival, I know that all the hard work done by our students in preparation for the carnival will be rewarded on the day. The team of staff who have worked tirelessly with Mr Dols to have everything organised and ready for the day, have been delighted with the students’ excitement and enthusiasm leading up to the special event. Our Kindy & Pre Primary students will also be enjoying their mini carnival next week and I look forward to spending time with them all, along with enthusiastic family members.
A surprise awaits our ELC students and staff on their return to school in Term 4, weather permitting, as a team coordinated by Adam Graffin, will be working on a project that has been on our agenda for a few years. Thanks to our local Member for Kingsley, Jessica Stojkovski and Dr Anne Aly, Federal Member for Cowan we were granted a State Government Grant of $15,000 ‘ Delivering Community Services in Partnership’ to create a cycle path in our Early Childhood area.
The Uniform Shop are now selling our faction polo tops with the school logo on the front. This will take our uniform to the next level of looking smart and consistent with colour and fabric as all students will eventually be ‘sporting’ the new tops as they outgrow their current faction shirt.
May you all enjoy a wonderful, relaxing holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back refreshed and rejuvenated after the holidays!
Wishing you God’s blessings
Andrea Millar

Our Classroom news
From Year 1
It has been a very busy term with an assembly, Book Week and Learning Journey but the highlight was our excursion to King’s Park. The children were very excited to go on the bus and the teachers were very nervous about the weather. The forecast was rain, rain rain, but that didn’t stop us, we grabbed our raincoats and off we went on a big adventure.
We learnt so much about Aboriginal culture and the role of Aboriginal women as the gatherers of bush tucker. We gathered Magpie eggs, plants that make cordial, bush medicine, snakes (pretend snakes of course) and learnt to not touch anything red as ‘red means dead’
Throw in some climbing, potion making, face painting, puddles and cubby building, and you have the best day ever. Some children still said the bus was the best part, so maybe next time we will stay dry and just go for a drive.
Library
All Afloat on Noah's Boat - Replay
The children in Pre Primary - Yr 3 took great delight in re-enacting the story performed by the staff during book week. With very few instructions they 'hammed' it up even more so than the original cast of performers.
Overdue Library Book Reminder
Just a reminder to return any 'overdue' library books before the end of term. Children are welcome to keep the books they borrowed or renewed this week for the school holidays.
If overdue books cannot be located and returned please let me know via email - library@liwara.wa.edu.au
Canteen News
CANTEEN NEWS
After waiting patiently for our assessment by WASCA with regard to our StarCap2 journey, we were advised that we had attained 4 Star Accreditation for the canteen. We were congratulated on a fantastic achievement of having 89% of our menu coded green items, and recording 83% green sales over the year, starting in Term 3 2020 and finalizing in Term 2 2021.
We held at least 19 promotions over the data collection period and fulfilled the necessary documentation and training. Whilst the planning and implementation was from the Canteen, it is actually the wonderful team of volunteers and the school community who have supported us, firstly with their help on theme days and also supporting the changes we have made to the lunch menu and recess items. Congratulations and thank you for all your support.
More good news is we have committed to another year of Starcap2 accreditation, so the students can look forward to more fun and interesting theme days next term. Book week certainly was a highlight of term 3.
If you haven’t already done so, the WASCA website is worth a visit, they have great recipes, many of which we use in the canteen and are a good source of information for canteens and the school community.
“School canteens are significant sources of food for many students. WASCA shares the FOCiS philosophy that school canteens differ from other food shops in the community in that they should not only provide foods which supply essential nutrients to ensure normal growth of children and adolescents, but should also reinforce the nutrition component of the school curriculum in a manner consistent with the health promoting school framework. Starcap2 - To increase the availability, promotion and SALES of foods and drinks categorised ‘GREEN’ under the HFD policy which is consistent with the Australian Dietary Guidelines.”
I have been asked by several parents and students if the Focaccia Pizzas are returning. The good news is.... Yes! They will be available in Term 4.
See pictures of some of our menu items below.
