From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and Students,

Welcome to the end of a wintery week of Term 4! Today, Friday 29 October we celebrate and thank the teaching profession on World Teachers’ Day which is held internationally in early October but as it falls during the school holidays for many parts of Australia, we celebrate it a little later.  Teachers, with support from parents and carers have ensured education continues across the country this year, despite major challenges in some of our States. It’s reinforced the significant role teachers play in the lives of children and students, their families and communities. Our amazing Parents & Friends Class Reps are working stealthily to organise a surprise for all our teachers with a lovely surprise to greet them on Friday morning!  Help collect a million virtual apples to thank teachers across Australia at www.worldteachersday.edu.au.

We are blessed at Liwara with an outstanding staff team.  It was heart warming to  witness families showing their appreciation to our staff for all that they do.

All Saints' Day is a holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to celebrate, honour and commemorate the saints of the Church. While it’s true that most saints have their own days of celebration on the Catholic calendar, it’s not always possible to observe all of these dates. Instead, most Catholics choose to celebrate all of the saints on a single day, All Saints’ Day.  All Saints’ Day has special significance to our school as our parish church is named ‘All Saints’ ‘. The parish will be celebrating the Parish Feast Day with morning tea after the 7.30am & 9.30am Masses on Sunday, the 31st of October. Together with the parish we will be celebrating All Saints' Day at our Family Mass on Sunday at 9.30am.  All families are encouraged to join in this celebration and to stay for morning tea. - there will be ice creams for the children and tea or coffee for the adults.

ELC BIKE TRACK Our students have been having such fun on our new bike track and the good news is that now that the surface has had time to fully set the markings have been done today.  Keep an eye out when you come in for pick up as it should be completed this afternoon and will be ready for Monday.

Our Liwara Fair is fast approaching! Please support the P&F by giving some time to assist on a stall as there are still spots available.  Without volunteers so much of what we do could not happen in our school, so we appreciate every moment that every volunteer gives.

SINGLE USE PLASTIC PHASING OUT  As announced by the Minister for the Environment in November 2020, Western Australia’s Plan for Plastics is coming into effect from the end of  2021. The following single-use plastics will then be phased out:

  • plates
  • bowls and lids
  • cutlery
  • stirrers
  • straws
  • cups and lids
  • thick plastic bags
  • polystyrene takeaway food containers; and
  • helium balloon releases

Catholic Education Western Australia Ltd (CEWA) supports the Western Australian Plan for Plastics, as the Plan reflets Pope Francis’ call to take ‘swift and unified global action’s as described in the encyclical Laudato Si’ and in addition, the Western Australia Plan for Plastics ties in with the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority of the Australian curriculum.  If you recall in the previous newsletter I shared the experience that we as a staff had with understanding a appreciating the Holy Father, Pope Francis’ urgent call to all people of the world to take swift and unified global action to save our planet.

At Liwara we have been focussing on getting rid of as many single use plastics in the school canteen, around the school and at the Fair for the last few years and in 2022 we will work together as a school community to avoid single-use plastics to mitigate the known impacts of single-use plastics on the environment and waste ways.  We will be promoting actions that:

  • prioritise avoiding single-use plastics
  • replace single-use items with reusable alternatives wherever possible
  • if it is not possible to use reusable items, choose non-plastic single-use alternatives that can be recovered, recycled or composted
  • minimise litter or contamination of waste treatment facilities by not using single-use plastics

CORE VALUES – As a learning community centred on the example of Chris, the following core values underpin our approach to everything we do at Liwara.

The table below shows when each Value’s certificate and medal is presented during the year.

Interschool Sports Carnival

The NIPSSA Inter School Athletics Carnival took place last Friday the 22nd of October at Ridgewood reserve.

It was a fantastic day for all the competitors involved from years 3 to 6. The sun was shining as the students competed in 100, 200 and 400m running as well as turbo-javelin and long jump. Like always the students maintained Liwara’s reputation for sportsmanship, participation, behaviour and endeavour.  A great day for all the students and staff involved and one sure to live on in the memory of the students involved for years to come.

Our Classroom news

From Kindy

In Religious Education the Kindy classes have been talking about God’s Creation. We have worked hard to create art works and pictures demonstrating the wonders in our beautiful world. We are learning about how to care for and appreciate the things that God has made. You can see a combination of these samples on display in the breezeway for the next two weeks. We have made butterflies, drawings, creature creations and some of our ideas about our amazing world.

We are very busy working on our letter and number formations, counting forwards and backwards and, rhyming sounds in words and playing with initial sounds of SATPIN. These skills are helping us to get ready for Pre-Primary.

In Kindy Red we have a hospital play centre where the students are experimenting with the roles of patient, nurse and doctor to create conversation, practise the skills of sharing and creative play. In Kindy Green we have a dinosaur play space where students are letting their imagination and creative play ideas run wild. Students are encouraged to take turns and share the play space with their peers, they have even made dinosaur fossils out of salt dough, which was a great fine motor activity.

The Book fair that was held last week was FANTASTIC!  It was so successful that we can purchase just over $2,000 worth of books for our library.  many of the new books will be on the shelves as early as next week!

We were delighted that the  Book Fair offered a great selection of books suitable for our students, and we hope the books purchased have captured imaginations and excited children and families about reading.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event and we hope you get many hours of joy out of the beautiful books purchased.

Scitech Primary Challenge Day

A group of Liwara students attended the annual Scitech Primary Challenge day on Tuesday. It involves a number of different activities including a major Design Thinking challenge which required students to design a new attraction for Perth targeted at a selected audience. Students were challenged in their thinking and had a great time learning and exploring Scitech in the process!

Canteen News

It was with great pleasure that I received the certificate for attaining 4 stars in the Starcap2 Accreditation for Liwara, presented to our school by Amanda Ferguson from the WA School Canteen Association.  The year had certainly flown by and it was exciting to plan the different promotions we had in the canteen.

We also have our Canteen journey showcased in the latest Canteam booklet that is distributed to schools, throughout Western Australia.   A big thank you to Mrs Millar and staff, students and the parents for supporting the canteen.

We have been receiving some beautiful eggs from Mrs Millar’s “girls”, who have been very busy indeed.

What a great example of sustainability in the canteen, as we use the eggs and recycle our waste back to the chickens

who then provide us again with the eggs to produce lovely, fresh and colourful food.

The pizza slab that we added to the menu for this term is very popular, so I have ordered in more stock so that

we can keep up with the demand for them.  They are on the menu under Daily Items, with three choices available and are considered a “green” item and available every day.

Thank you

Deb & Cathy
